How it works

Words and sentences are detected with the browser’s language-aware Unicode segmentation. Characters count visible grapheme clusters: a combined emoji counts as one character. Whitespace includes spaces, tabs and line breaks. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Counts may differ from editors that use different rules.

“Hello world!” has 2 words, 12 visible characters and 11 characters without whitespace. At 200 words per minute, its estimated reading time is 1 second.

Does it support Russian and emoji?

Yes. The counter uses the page language for word and sentence segmentation and groups combined emoji and accented letters into visible characters.

Is my pasted text stored?

No. This tool does not upload text, save it to browser storage or place it in a share link. Reloading the page clears the text.
