Weighted grades

Enter scores and weights as percentages. Weights are normalized to their total, so completed work does not have to add up to 100%. Zero-weight rows do not affect the average. Up to 50 assessments.

What do I need on the final?

Required final exam score
101.67%
Course grade with a 100% final
89.5%

The target is not reachable with a final exam score of 100% or less.

The current grade is your average on all work other than the final. Final weight must be greater than 0% and at most 100%. Required scores are rounded up to two decimals. Scores above 100% require extra credit, which this tool does not assume.

gˉ=∑igiwi∑iwi,f=t−c(1−w)w\bar{g}=\frac{\sum_i g_i w_i}{\sum_i w_i},\qquad f=\frac{t-c(1-w)}{w}

How it works

Add each assessment's percentage score g and percentage weight to calculate the weighted average. For the final exam, enter your current average c, target t, and final weight w (expressed as a fraction in the formula). You can transfer the weighted average into the final calculator; future row edits only transfer when you press the button again.

Example

Scores of 80% and 90% with weights of 40% and 60% give an 86% average. With a current grade of 85%, a target of 90%, and a final worth 30%, you need at least 101.67% on the final, so the target is not reachable without extra credit.

Frequently asked questions

Must the weights total 100%?

No. The weighted average divides by the sum of entered weights. This lets you calculate the average on completed assessments; it is not a prediction of unentered coursework.

Does this convert grades to GPA or letter grades?

No. Results are percentages. GPA and letter-grade cutoffs vary by institution; use your course's official grading policy.
