Exponent and Root Calculator

Real results only. Negative bases require integer exponents; negative radicands require odd root degrees. Zero to zero and zero to negative powers are not supported.

How it works

Choose Power for a base and exponent, or Root for a radicand and a nonzero integer degree. Negative odd roots are supported, including reciprocal roots with negative degrees. Results use browser floating-point arithmetic.

Example

2 to the power 3 is 8. The cube root of −27 is −3. The square root of 81 is 9.

Frequently asked questions

Can the exponent be fractional?

Yes, for nonnegative bases when the result is defined. Negative bases with fractional exponents are rejected; use Root with an odd integer degree instead.

Are results exact?

Not always. Floating-point arithmetic rounds irrational and very small values; extreme results can overflow or underflow. The display uses up to twelve significant digits.
