Roman Numeral Converter

Uses standard subtractive notation (IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM). Lowercase input is accepted; nonstandard forms are rejected.

Converted value
MMXXVI

How it works

Choose a direction and enter a number or Roman numeral. The converter uses canonical subtractive notation without overbars. Changing direction carries the current valid result into the input.

Example

2026 becomes MMXXVI. XLII is 42; MCMXCIV is 1994.

Frequently asked questions

Why are zero and numbers above 3999 rejected?

Standard Roman numerals have no zero. Larger values need extended conventions such as overbars, which this converter does not implement.

Why is IIII rejected?

This tool accepts canonical notation: four is IV, not IIII. Clock-face and historical variants exist but are outside this converter's scope.
